What this converter does
This tool turns JPG (also written JPEG) images into PNG files. You can convert a single picture or a whole batch at once, and download the results individually or as a ZIP file. The picture’s dimensions stay the same, and photos stay upright, using the rotation information your camera saved.
JPG and PNG: what is the difference?
Both are common image formats, but they work differently.
JPG uses lossy compression. It keeps files small by discarding detail the eye is unlikely to notice. That makes it ideal for photographs, and it is the format most cameras and phones use. Each time a JPG is edited and saved again, a little more detail can be lost.
PNG is lossless. It stores every pixel exactly, supports transparency, and keeps sharp edges crisp. That makes it the better choice for logos, icons, screenshots, diagrams and images with text. The trade-off is size: a photo saved as PNG is usually several times larger than the same photo as JPG.
When to convert JPG to PNG
- Editing in several steps. If you will open, change and save an image many times, working in PNG avoids adding new compression artifacts at each save.
- A form or program asks for PNG. Some design tools, print services and websites accept only PNG.
- Graphics with text or lines. Converting prevents further quality loss if you will add text or overlays.
- Preparing an image for transparency. PNG can hold a transparent background. Converting does not remove the background for you, but it gives you a format that can store one after you edit it.
What converting cannot do
Converting to PNG will not sharpen a blurry photo or undo the blocky patches of a heavily compressed JPG. It preserves the image as it is now. The file will also usually get larger, not smaller.
If you need a smaller file, you probably want the opposite: PNG to JPG or Compress Image. To change the dimensions, use Resize Image. To put images into a document, use JPG to PDF.
Tips
- Keep your originals. Converting creates new files; your JPGs are unchanged.
- Batch convert by selecting many files at once. The ZIP download keeps them together.
- Check the file size shown next to each result before uploading somewhere with a size limit. PNG photos can be large.
- Screenshots saved as JPG often have fuzzy text. Converting will not fix it, but taking a new screenshot saved as PNG will.
A quick guide to image formats
| Format | Best for | Transparency | Typical size for photos |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPG | Photos, camera pictures, forms | No | Small |
| PNG | Logos, screenshots, text, graphics | Yes | Large |
| WebP | Websites and modern apps | Yes | Smallest |
If you are unsure which to use, JPG is the most widely accepted format for photos, and PNG is the safest choice for anything with text or sharp edges.
After converting
Open one of the new PNG files to check it before deleting anything. If a program or website still rejects it, check whether it also has a size or dimension limit: a PNG photo can be much larger than the original JPG, and Resize Image can bring its dimensions down.
Private by design
Your images are converted inside your web browser. They are not uploaded to our servers or anywhere else, so personal photos and documents stay on your device. Converting also leaves out hidden details such as the location where a photo was taken.
Works on any device
The converter runs in any up-to-date browser on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac. There is nothing to install and no account to create. On a computer, you can drag images onto the drop area or paste one with Ctrl+V or Cmd+V. Large photos take a moment longer on older phones because the conversion happens on the device itself, and a progress bar shows each image as it is converted.
